The Swiss National Day

The Swiss National Day is celebrated on 1 August in duty-free Samnaun in the Engadin. Young and old alike enjoy the colourful village market and the varied supporting programme. In the evening, Graubünden Councillor of States Stefan Engler gives the celebratory speech before the drone show and bonfires bring the day to a close.

Once again this year, Samnaun, in the very east of Switzerland, is offering a varied programme for locals and guests on 1 August. The village market in the car-free Samnaun village starts at 10.00 am. Shops and producers from Samnaun and the surrounding area present their products and sell local specialities and all kinds of delicacies at colourfully decorated market stalls. The event is complemented by the mountain railways and the emergency services, who are also on site with their vehicles and equipment, as well as helicopter tours with Heli Bernina. Various performances provide further entertainment for young and old.

The festive evening programme begins at 8.00 pm and is accompanied by the Samnaun Music Society. The children light up the streets in a joint lantern procession through the village. For almost three decades, the valley community has invited a prominent personality to give the evening speech. This year, Swiss politician Stefan Engler will address those present. The Swiss National Day will conclude with impressive bonfires and a drone show.
